SCHOOL’S OUT FOR SUMMER!
It’s holiday time! Everyone loves a holiday, whether it is a staycation or an adventure to the other side of the world. As much as time off work with friends/family and a week or so of relative relaxation does wonders for our overall health, it isn’t always plain sailing…
Whether you have a long car or plane journey, are sleeping on hard bunk in a camper van or doing more sport than normal, you may have some unexpected aches and pains.
If you do need an osteopath to help pre or post-holiday then let me know on 07879 604818 or click here to book. I am working normal daytime, evening and weekend hours over the summer in London, Brighton and Hove.
I can help devise some holiday stretches/exercises and advise on any movements to alleviate any muscular or joint niggles whilst you are away. There are a few simple stretches below, adapted to try en-route or whilst you are away.
Otherwise, just enjoy the summer and celebrate your freedom from desks, phones and laptops.
HOLIDAY STRETCHES
DRIVING
As much as it is tempting to just push on to your destination when you have a long drive, and you may have a pathological dislike of service stations, a stop every hour (ish) has many benefits. Not least a coffee and a good stretch! This standing manoeuvre is great for your hips and legs that may be getting tight from sitting and messing about with pedals in heavy traffic. Just do this standing against the car in the car park.
FLYING
However ‘short-haul’ your flight may be, you will be sat in a cramped seat for at least two hours. Try and get an aisle seat so you can at least stick your legs out occasionally. Sitting means your hip flexors will be tightening up, so, get up and stand in the aisle for a minute or two and try this (no tdesk required!) or do it queuing for the loo…
POOLSIDE
Whilst you are getting your holiday dosage of Vitamin D (with the appropriate sunscreen liberally applied of course!) your back may not like being stationery for too long. This is a classic stretch for your whole spine and all you need is a flat surface and a beach towel!
